Broaden-and-Build Theory of Positive Emotions
The Broaden-and-Build Theory of Positive Emotions was developed from the Positive Psychology movement. It analyzed mental health in two levels: positive experiences (i.e., involving happiness) and positive traits (e.g., courage and wisdom).
According to this theory, positive emotions offer 3 benefits for the development of our mental health:
- Positive emotions broaden people's mindsets. For example, the positive emotion of joy brings about an urge to play; and the positive emotion of interest brings about the urge to explore.
- Positive emotions increase our physical, intellectual, social, and psychological resources.
- Positive emotions fuel the growth of positive traits, like resilience.
